OUR HISTORY

Camp Brim Shire was founded in 1980 by Richard and Sherry Hashagen.  We are governed by an all volunteer 501(c)3 foundation. The Association for Midwest Disadvantaged Youth began with a handful of volunteer engineers, teachers, physicians, juvenile officers, accountants, homemakers, educators and business persons.

With 40 acres of Ozark trees and rocks north of St. James, Missouri and a
mere $100, we began building a new ADA camp for the disabled and
special needs youth in mid-Missouri. In July, 1980 the first visitors arrived  -
a group of 13 boy scouts from Troop 271 of North St. Louis County, Missouri.
These scouts camped in our forest with very limited resources, but great
enthusiasm for learning. Troop 271 still returns three times a year.

Today we serve children, nursing home seniors and Veterans from the
Missouri Veterans Home - disabled or otherwise, at our fully ADA accessible
campus. Programs are staffed with professionals from our referring agencies
and supplemented with professionals for specific or unique programs as
requested.

Key to our success are the many volunteers who take time to make the Camp Brim Shire experience memorable. They include community leaders, local businesses, students from the University of Missouri- Rolla, scouting groups, military personnel from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, high school civic classes and many, many others.

Camp Brim Shire was designed, built and is operated solely on donations.  From 1980 to 1988 Brim Shire was totally free to all children and agencies. Over time continued growth, increasing utilities and maintenance costs necessitated the need to establish a minimal rate of just $2.00 per day per camper.  An important note -  the AMDY Foundation and Camp Brim Shire has no paid employees. All staff are volunteers. Less than 4% of all donations / funds are spent on administration costs.

We invite you to visit our campus and learn more about our foundation and Camp Brim Shire where our dedication remains the same... “ Let no Child be demeaned or have his/her wonder diminished because we are unsure of our commitment.”
