CAMPUS & FACILITIES
Camp Brim Shire features a fully ADA accessible campus located
conveniently off Interstate I-44 seven miles north of St. James,
Missouri. Surrounded by oak and maple trees, campers enjoy scenic
woodlands, a stocked lake, ponds and a nature trail. In addition,
there is a special 1/3 mile paved trail for the blind, individuals
confined to a wheel chair or seniors, offering them a safe trail experience.
The campus
includes a 4,000 sq. ft. recreation / activity gymnasium, offering indoor movies, special equipment for
challenged
youth, games and an outdoor covered stage and nature study area. Our
20’ x 40’ in-ground therapy pool is available with ADA access. A unique
3,600 sq. ft. education center supports special four
week summer school programs for St James and other school districts. We
provide a (unique to camping) “wildlife safari” program designed for
the blind and many other visiting groups. Additional programs are available to teach living skills development to single mothers or
fathers, newly weds, seniors and the mentally and physically
challenged. Our lakeside dining hall, provided by Boeing, St. Louis, seats more than 120 guests and is also available for weddings, family
reunions, community meetings or business retreat workshops.
CABINS
Tucked
into the shade of our trees, our accommodations include three “mini-dorms”, four “baker” cabins and four Adirondack cabins providing
100 comfortable, soft warm beds in addition to our new 40 BED special
needs ADA dormitory completed in 2004. Two distinct cabin areas
include a restroom / shower complex, lighting, flag poles, safety
equipment, play equipment and lighted ADA paved access to every campus
facility.
MEDICAL CENTER
With safety in mind, the Camp Brim Shire ADA emergency medical center
provides four hospital beds, rest rooms, first aid supplies and
equipment. Ready and available for trauma emergency support, we have yet
to use this facility, which was provided by the generous support of the
Lutheran Charities Foundation.
PLAYGROUNDS
Our playgrounds were designed for children ages 4 -18
and provide important activities for skills development and confidence
building in addition to simply having fun and healthy exercise. Also,
there are giant swings, play forts, a disabled access fishing dock and
disabled access decks. Our playgrounds are generously donated by the St. Louis Variety
Club and the St. Louis Old Newsboys Fund for Children.
ANGEL WING:
Unique at Camp Brim Shire is our apartment for the sole use of
traveling families, with a sick or injured child, while in our area.
Similar to the “Ronald McDonald House”, the facilities are available through referral by one of our five regional
hospitals in the area. The apartment is also available for traveling
seniors who may become sick or injured. Angel Wing is a free
service.
RV / CAMPING: Brim
Shire provides RV / Camping Sites for traveling youth groups (church /
school / agency) while in our region. These sites are also for
traveling families with RVs, motor homes or campers
under the Angel
Wing Policy.
SECURITY:
Camp Brim Shire is a safe, fenced campus with an active Neighborhood
Watch Program. The camp director lives on site to provide 24 hour
security. Children from referring agencies, victims of domestic
violence and others in need can relax, play and enjoy our campus
without concern. |
